Review: Beautiful Broken Rules

What happens when you create rules to keep others out?

One thing Emerson Moore has come to terms with is that she is the school slut. She knows her way around a frat house and how to get what she wants. She doesn’t make any excuses for her actions and she doesn’t pretend to be anything different. She is who she is and with that she knows how to have a good time. She’s made rules to keep relationships at bay and avoid the demons of her past.

When her best friend, Cole has his two friends from back home move in with him she begins to think she has met her match with Jaxon Riley. Jax is the perfect mixture of tattooed muscle and a sweet-talking mouth. With “hand” written notes, a voice that exudes sex and knowing just how to get under her skin, Jaxon learns how to break all the rules. But will he just end up breaking her heart anyway?

I am still smiling... This was such a wonderful book.

“I can't live without you.  I'm done trying.”

Honestly. There is not one bad thing I can say about Beautiful Broken Rules.  I had just come away from reading a highly intense series, with some crazy characters, and this novel was exactly what I needed.

Don't get me wrong there is a bit of drama that goes on, as there always will be, but it was drama I understood and could wrap my head around.  It was real life.  I understood every decision that the characters made, and it was exactly the breath of fresh air that I needed.  Nothing felt like it was happening for the sake of it 'having' to happen to further along the story.  It just felt natural and real, and I never wanted it to end.

“You're my heart.  You don't walk away from your heart," he whispered in my ear.”

I have fallen for both Emerson and Jaxon.   Emerson is not the little insecure wall flower that I am quite frankly sick of seeing too much of.  She is independent, strong and has a hell of a heart.  She isn't used to allowing herself to feel love, but when she finally breaks those walls down, it's a beautiful thing to see.  And Jaxon?  Could he be be any sweeter?  The notes he leaves around for Emerson, and the ones that he writes on her hand.  Completely swoonworthy.  You will fall in love with him.  Also, the epilogue is in his point of view, and it was perfect.  Simply perfect.

“He finished quickly, closed my fingers into my palm and kissed them.  I slowly uncurled them to read his message, which was written boldly across the expanse of my palm.  One word that screamed a whole lot more.

MINE.”

And the side characters?  Each and every one of them deserve their own book.  I want to delve more into Quinn and Cole, they were left in a good place but I want more. Then there is Jace, Jaxon's brother, who I just adored.  He was caring, sweet, compassionate, and funny.  Oh, and did I mention he is Jaxon's TWIN brother?  Holy hades there are two of them... Does it get any better than that?

“Why didn't you tell me there was a smoking hot carbon copy of you?”

I am still shocked that this is a debut novel.  I will be on the look out for anything in the future by Kimberly Lauren.  And my hope for this to be turned into a series?  Well the end of the Acknowledgements had this little line.. "I can’t wait to jump back into this world and I hope you come back. - KL"  I have done a little snooping (aka Twitter stalking) and have seen Kimberly confirm she is currently writing Jace's story.  YAY! I could not be happier.
